Kia has tuned the EV6 with the aim of making it more fun to drive, and it has a battery to give all versions an official range of well over 300 miles

WHEN IT comes to electric vehicles, not many do it better than Kia’s marvellous EV6. As the manufacturer explains: ‘The EV6 is a fully electric crossover from Kia.  It marks a new era and sets new standards for years to come. Get inspired by its eye-catching and inspired design.’

On this occasion you can believe the hype!

Let’s start with the mileage question, which always pops up when it comes to electric cars.

Kia has tuned the EV6 with the aim of making it more fun to drive, and it has a 77.4kWh battery to give all versions an official range of well over 300 miles.

The pricier dual-motor (AWD) version has a second electric motor powering the front wheels, increasing power to 321bhp.

One of the first things that struck me about the EV6 was its size. It’s big! While it has small SUV dimensions it moves like a feline. I remember taking a friend from East London to Heathrow Airport and the only word I can use is ‘effortless.’

Also in the effortless category was charging of the EV6. It took less than 20 minutes to gain more than 200 miles of range. This is where this particular Kia leds the way. In most cases, charging of an electric vehicle can be laborious and time consuming business. In the past I’ve taken my laptop, notebook and diary in order to kill dead time. This is not the case with the EV6.

Rapid charging enables longer journeys by adding as much range as possible in the shortest amount of time. Charging power will decrease significantly after 80% state-of-charge has been reached. A typical rapid charge therefore rarely exceeds 80%.

Once inside the cabin, it won’t take you too long to get cosy. It is Innovative use of interior space, creating a unique spatial experience.

There are slim, lightweight and contemporary seats, finished in vegan leather while the dashboard is clad in materials made from recycled plastic bottles.

What you’ll find with electric cars is masses of space. There is no handbrake which when you really think about it, takes up far too much space. Rather you have little buttons and switches which provides you with the extra room.

The dashboard is focused around a pair of 12.3-inch curved displays. One houses the instrument displays, while the second is a touchscreen for media.

Standard equipment includes LED exterior lighting, 19-inch alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, folding door mirrors and automatic wipers from the off. There’s also artificial leather seats, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting and dual-zone climate control. Remember what I said about getting cosy?!

The EV6 is innovative, no doubt about that. Features include Forward Collision Avoidance Assist (FCA) which now includes sensors for city, pedestrian, cyclists, junction turning on all models, with junction crossing on GT-Line S.

Add Highway Driving Assist (HDA), Lane Follow Assist (LFA), Lane Keep Assist (LKA) and Driver Attention Warning (DAW) fitted as standard on all versions and you can see that you get a lot for your money.

On the practicality front you won’t have too many challenges in terms of passenger space or load-lugging. You get up to 490 litres of luggage space with the seats up and with a maximum boot capacity of 1,300 litres when folding the rear seats down.

The EV6 is a huge leap forward in an electric journey that first started in 2015 with Kia’s Soul EV.

We had all better get used to electric vehicles as the years go by. Some manufacturers are now totally committed to the cause and in the classy Kia EV6 is one of the best electric cars on sale, with a great range and rapid charging.

The EV6 is the result of a collaborative effort between all three studios in Kia’s global design network in Namyang (Korea), Frankfurt (Germany), and Irvine (California, USA).

All three venues have contributed to something special.
